The New Chosen People: A Corporate View of Election, by William Klein of Denver Seminary is a stimulating book which argues that the concept of "election", or "predestination unto salvation" is used in the New Testament in a corporate, rather than individual, sense. The breadth of verses covered and the shortness of the book rather determines that the exegesis of any individual verse or chapter (such as Romans 9) will be exemplary rather than exhaustive. As such, his conclusions may not be finally satisfying. Nevertheless, Klein raised very pertinent issues for discussion, as he maintains that individual "election" or "predestination" seems limited to function, rather than faith. This issue, so prominent in the debates within Western theology since Augustine, is important for our understanding of the nature of the relationship between God and man. I recommend that every thinking evangelical read and interact with William Klein's thesis. God bless and keep you all, Matthew (soulfyre)
