Do these contradict? If not, how could they be viewed as to not contradict.

Of course it's not contradictory. Chapter one is an overview of the creation and chapter two contains more detail about day six. I would recommend the Answers in Genesis website as a place people can go to get many questions such as this answered. This may be getting off on a different subject, but do you take the Genesis stories of creation to be literal or symbolic accountings of the creation of man?
