How important is apologetics in witnessing? How can we use apologetics to witness?

Well, of course I would say "very important" because of my personal interest in apologetics and because Peter says in I Peter 3:15-16, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander." This, in fact, not only encourages us to be able to give an "apologia", or defense, of our faith, but it emphasizes the importance of an honorable Christian life ("your good behavior in Christ") set as a context to our verbal witness, and our demeanor ("do this with gentleness and respect"), often lacking in the practice of "hit and run" evangelism. Naturally I voted "very important" as well. Souldfyre's summary is excellent. I would only add that God does incredible things in the life of the person who dutifully seeks to "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." The sanctifying effect is beyond measure in the life of the Christian. This is spoken from my personal experience.
