Designing promotional art for business, including logos, brochures, web pages, ads...all meant to adequately and postively render the companies image to its several cliente is a challenging and continuously changing profession. For those of you who are graphic artists, tell us how your Christian beliefs effect what and how you create. God bless, Matthew

God bless, Matthew i'll get back to you in two years when i get my bachelors degree. i'm really interested in your question too. i was wondering if Christian graphic designers out there ever have to refuse jobs because of their themes or because the company supports something.....immoral.

Oh dear, now we're close to home. I work for an advertising company, however, I don't do design work for them, I simply keep track of the images. Fortunately, the company I work for does VERY tasteful work and I have yet to see anything that tweaks my conscience. On one occasion, I saw a portfolio that contained work done by another agency for an adult video store; personally, if I were in the position of hiring, I wouldn't have hired the person. Also, I don't think we'd ever accept an adult bookstore as a client (we don't have to, we're big enough to pick and choose) I wouldn't want to work on anything associated with it. I don't know what would happen if I refused, but I would be willing to accept the consequences. The design work that I do is usually for church, so I definitely have the Christian point of view working. Melinda

I'm a Graphic Design student and I definitely feel that I'm part of a minority in my field. While the majority of designers seem to be liberal (politically and morally), I'm finding a few Christians and/or conservatives along the way.

You know, as I think about it, I really do think that the majority of artist-types are non-Christian. I think that would also hold true in music and acting as well. I just can't think of that many famous self-professed Christian musicians, artitsts or actors. It also seems that those who do profess to be part of a religion are practicing more non-traditional types of religion like The Kabalah or Scientology and even some of the eastern religions.
Do you think that the reason there are so few Christians is because it just isn't politically correct or just another sign of the times?

I think Creative-types just tend to have a distaste for tradition. That, in American society, would include most forms of Christianity. Artists can take "being different" to the extreme, often without a good reason.
That's why we're looked upon as such oddities.

Moving on, do you think we've viewed as less creative than the more liberal artists? (ie: restricted by our conservative nature)

Moving on, do you think we've viewed as less creative than the more liberal artists? (ie: restricted by our conservative nature) Possibly, but I think it kind of depends on the ethics and general morality of the company you're working for. For example, I would say that the company I work for is fairly conservative, everything that is produced here is viewed with the integrity of the company in mind. Nothing tasteless would ever go out of here. So I think a Christian could easily fit in. However, I believe there are other agencies where anything goes and a Christian might be seen as less creative. Melinda

This certainly applies to design content, but what about the deeper side of design? The way I've been trained is to do a ton of thumbnail images to start with. In doing this, I usually try to explore a wide range of approaches and styles.
My question would be if our designs themselves tend to be more conservative (as opposed to unexected or avant garde) than our liberal counterparts.

There is good art and bad art of every genre. Is Christianity synonymous with boring? Tomorrow I'll link up some images done by one of our art directors for his church. I think they are anything but conservative and they were created to appeal to the youth. They may be a bit controversial for some churches, but I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder. Melinda

Hey, guys! I just ran across Matthew's Homepage, the homepage of Matthew Nelson. I find much of his artwork arresting and visually stunning. I have invited him to participate in the forum (I don't know what his response will be). But if you have time, take a look at his work and let me know what you think! God bless, Matthew (soulfyre)
